Port Jefferson is an impressive incorporated village in the Town of Brookhaven of Suffolk County, located on the north shore of Long Island, New York. The village is known affectionately by locals as “Port Jeff”. At the time of the 2010 census, the village had a population of approximately 7,750 residents. Settled in the 17th century, the community remained rural until the area was actively developed as a shipbuilding center in the mid-19th century. The area now has a tourist-based economy. The port remains active, serving as the terminus for the Bridgeport and Port Jefferson Ferry, a commercial ferry line between Long Island and Connecticut. Port Jefferson also has a station on the Long Island Rail Road's Port Jefferson Branch. This village serves as the transportation hub for the surrounding communities of Belle Terre, Miller Place, Mount Sinai, Poquott, and the Setaukets. Additionally, this splendid community enjoys a great location about 60 miles east of New York City.
The public now has better access to the waterfront in Port Jefferson, which was previously blocked by industrial lots. Danfords Hotel and Marina are a waterfront project made possible by combining new and historical structures into a single luxury unit. Danfords has successfully transformed an area which was previously used for industrial purposes into a recreational area which now boasts a marina, walkable pier, and hotel. Harborfront Park is another example of creative innovation in turning what was previously a Mobil Oil terminal into a public park with a seasonal ice skating rink, a promenade, and picnic grounds. The Port Jefferson Village Center, formerly a shipyard warehouse, was transformed into a new public space for events and recreation. The now defunct Mather & Jones Shipyard was converted to a promenade of shops known as Chandler Square. In addition to a wonderful waterfront, Port Jefferson also boasts excellent schools. The children of the village are served primarily by the Port Jefferson Union Free School District, with a portion of the children in its upper port attending Comsewogue Schools.
