Point Lookout is a village in the town of Hempstead, Nassau County, New York, located at the very eastern edge of Long Beach Barrier Island. With a population of approximately 1,219 residents, Point Lookout is adjacent to Lido Beach which abuts Long Beach. Point Lookout covers 0.2 square miles, approximately 122 acres. Point Lookout is a cozy eleven blocks long and three blocks wide. A bank, grocery store, gas station, churches, and restaurants are all within walking distance. Long Beach Barrier Island, lying between Reynolds Channel and the Atlantic Ocean was formed by glacial deposits. Bays, dunes, ponds, marshes and beaches all serve to support a complex ecosystem. The first known inhabitants of the area were Native Americans, the Merrick (or Meroke) tribe of the Algonquin nation. Dutch settlers were the first to arrive in 1640 with the English soon to follow in 1660. In the 1920’s Point Lookout, Incorporated was established. Concrete streets were built dividing the land into small lots which were sold for about $2,500 creating the Point Lookout community. Today, Lido Boulevard provides access to Loop Parkway which is the primary link to the mainland.
The speed limit, which is strictly enforced throughout this child friendly village, is 15 miles per hour. Neighbors watch out for each other here. Children in this hamlet are served by the Long Beach School District. There are three different beaches in the Point Lookout community heading from the west to the east, there is County Beach for Nassau County residents, Town of Hempstead Beach for members of the Hempstead township, and then there’s a beach exclusively for the residents of Point Lookout. The beaches charge $10 for local residents to park and $25 for non-resident. These beaches are favored be people from all over this general area because they’re considered to be much quieter and more serene than other nearby beaches. These white sand beaches are are cared for by Nassau County. They’re clean, and just a short walk from the parking areas. These beaches are the perfect place to swim, ride bicycles, toss a Frisbee, fly a kite or build a sandcastle. Boating and fishing are also popular pastimes in Point Lookout and boat rentals are available. Bring your own food and beverage because there are no food concessions on the beach other than the occasional ice cream truck. There's certainly no shortage of places to buy food in the neighborhood though with a grocery store, clam bar, seafood restaurant, coffeeshop, deli, and pizzeria.
Homes in Point Lookout range in price from around $449,000 for a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom home to roughly $3,000,000 for a 4 bedroom, 4 bathroom home. The average price for a single family home in Point Lookout is about $895,000. That said, homes in the Point Lookout area have been known to sell for upwards of $5,000,000.
