Carle Place is a charming hamlet and census designated place (CDP) on Long Island in prestigious Nassau County, New York. The village name is derived from Carle House, a thirty-two room house built by Silas Carle in the 1800’s. The house was called Carle Place and so the surrounding area was later named the same. The hamlet is comprised of 0.935 square miles and is located in the 11514 zip code. The population of the village is approximately 4,981 residents. Meadowbrook State Parkway bisects the town north to south and Northern State Parkway forms the northern border along with a portion of the East Jericho Turnpike. Old Country Road, which is a major east-west artery, and Glen Cove Road, which runs north-south, feature the majority of the town’s commercial activity. Residents of Carle Place enjoy their own amenities, as well as those of neighboring communities via a station on the mainline of the Long Island Railroad (LIRR). Villages bordering Carle Place include Mineola, Garden City, Old Westbury, Westbury and East Garden City.
Carle Place is a shoppers paradise. Roosevelt Field Mall is nearby, lying just south and Plaza 200 Outlets Mall is to the west. The Galleria at Westbury Plaza is to the southeast and Country Glen Center, another small shopping mall, is nearby as well. Additionally, Carle Place has a wide variety of restaurants and a large movie theater. It also has its own school district, Carle Place Union Free School District, one of the smallest in the state of New York. Some parts of Westbury and Mineola are included in this school district. An early name and still a nickname for the region is “Frog Hollow”. Local High School sports teams are the “Frogs” and their school colors are green and white. Local schools have a reputation for excellence and are one of the many reasons why Carle Place is a popular destination among homebuyers with children. All three schools, elementary, middle and high school are on the same campus. This remarkable community has an interesting history. A developer, William J. Levitt bought 19 acres here in 1946 for an experiment. He brought in pre-cut lumber and quickly assembled 600 low-cost houses near Carle Place Station, offering affordable suburban living with a short commute to New York City. This served as the prototype for the huge community Levitt would begin the following year in Levittown.
