Old Field is a splendid village in the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. At the time of the 2010 census, the population of Old Field was around 918 residents. Old Field has a total area of 2.2 square miles, almost all of it being land, and is in the 11733 zip code. There were 13 tribes or groups of Native Americans who inhabited the north and south shores of what is now Long Island when the Europeans first arrived. The Setalcott (translated “great neck”), inhabited the north side of what is now Brookhaven. The Setalcott sold the area currently known as Old Field, which had been used for farming, for payment of awls, needles, knives, hatchets, hoes and coats. The land began to be divided into six-acre lots in 1661.
Because of its rich history and heritage, Old Field is home to a number of historical points of interest. Old Field Point Lighthouse, which dates back to 1823, is situated on the northern tip of Old Field. Originally, the beacon was lit by nine whale oil lamps. The glow was magnified by a large glass reflector. The light source later became kerosene lamps. In 1933, a revolving electric light was installed. The light from the 500 watt bulb has a 30 mile range. The lighthouse belongs to the village of Old Field with the proviso that the government can take possession of it in times of national emergency, which it did for a time during WWII. Old Field is on the north shore of Long Island and in 2010 was named the 25th most expensive place to live in the United States.
