Fort Salonga was a British fort used during the Revolutionary War and was located near the border of the towns of Huntington and Smithtown on the shores of Long Island Sound. The fort was named after one of the fort’s architects. The fort was overtaken one night when Colonial soldiers landed on the beach in neighboring Crab Meadow and seized the fort. Local red clay proved suitable for brickmaking, an early trade in the area. In the days of horse and buggy, the streets of New York City were cleaned of manure which was then brought by barge to farms in the area to be used as fertilizer. The empty barges were returned to the city laden with locally manufactured bricks. The Brown family owned a brick company in Fort Salonga in the late 19th century and imprinted their bricks with the initials BBB for Brown’s Best Bricks. The Brown’s home on Breeze Hill Road serves as the clubhouse for the Hills Country Club.
