Seaford is a census-designated place and village in Nassau County, Long Island, New York, with a population around 15,294 residents. Comprised of 2.6 square miles, Seaford is in the 11783 zip code. This portion of the island was originally home to the Ustase, a Native American tribe who called the area “Great Water Land”. Ship Captain John Seaman, a native of Seaford, East Sussex, England, settled the area. The village was often referred to as Seaman’s Neck. Agriculture was prominent during this era and the earliest cash crops were corn and wheat. Fishing and oystering were also popular. In the 19th century, villages on Long Island began to grow due to the creation of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). The town of “Jerusalem South”, Seaford’s original name, seemed unaffected. In 1868 the village was renamed “Seaford” in honor of the founding captain and his hometown. The towns soon had a post office, church and a one room school. Although the town was very much unchanged, Seaford caught the eye of wealthy New Yorkers who flocked here for summer retreats. When Sunrise Highway came to the area in 1929, so did new residents. After a couple of hotels were built, celebrities came to duck hunt in South Oyster Bay, notably Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.
