Seaford is a census-designated place and village in Nassau County, Long Island, New York, with a population around 15,294 residents. Comprised of 2.6 square miles, Seaford is in the 11783 zip code. This portion of the island was originally home to the Ustase, a Native American tribe who called the area “Great Water Land”. Ship Captain John Seaman, a native of Seaford, East Sussex, England, settled the area. The village was often referred to as Seaman’s Neck. Agriculture was prominent during this era and the earliest cash crops were corn and wheat. Fishing and oystering were also popular. In the 19th century, villages on Long Island began to grow due to the creation of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). The town of “Jerusalem South”, Seaford’s original name, seemed unaffected. In 1868 the village was renamed “Seaford” in honor of the founding captain and his hometown. The towns soon had a post office, church and a one room school. Although the town was very much unchanged, Seaford caught the eye of wealthy New Yorkers who flocked here for summer retreats. When Sunrise Highway came to the area in 1929, so did new residents. After a couple of hotels were built, celebrities came to duck hunt in South Oyster Bay, notably Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. Local villages within 2 miles are Wantagh, Massapequa, Bellmore, North Wantagh, Massapequa Park, North Massapequa, North Bellmore, and East Massapequa.
The children of the area are served by the Seaford Union-Free School District which oversees two elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school. There are also two private parochial schools in the community. Cedar Creek Park, on the south end of Seaford, contains a playground and athletic fields and offers a wide range of community based activities. In fact, local, community organized sports are plentiful. Travel is easy for residents as Seaford has a station on the Babylon Branch of the Long Island Railroad. Nassau County Inter County Express also provides bus service to the Seaford community. The most common industries in the area are in the field of public administration, professional scientific and technical, and educational services. The most common occupations are sales and sales related occupations, and office and administrative support. There are also lots of great restaurants in the area featuring locally caught seafood, and many outstanding pizzerias as well.
