Medford is a remarkable hamlet and census designated place (CDP) in the charming Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. Medford is in the southwest portion of Brookhaven and at the time of the 2010 census, the population was approximately 24,142 residents. Medford has a total area of 10.8 square miles, all of it being land, and the local zip code is 11763. Several busy roads pass through Medford: Horseblock Road, NY 112, Patchogue-Yaphank Road/Sills Road, and the Long Island Expressway. The Long Island Rail Road provides transportation service to Medford as does the Suffolk County Transit which provides bus service to residents. The Long Island Rail Road built the Medford Station in 1843 on a flat piece of land known as the Long Island Central Pine Barrens. The station was a connector to Patchogue Stage Road between Patchogue and Port Jefferson. Soon a post office was established. This easy access to major thoroughfares and public transportation afford Medford residents abundant options for shopping, dining, entertainment and recreation. The children of Medford attend schools in the Patchogue-Medford School District except for those residing in the extreme southeast portion who are served by the South Country Central School district, and the extreme northeastern portion who are served by the Longwood Central School District. The Long Island Rail Road auctioned off land around the train station in 1850. An investor bought four square miles of land, subdivided it into 25 by 100 foot lots, and sold them for $10 to $25. The land was poor for farming. Legend has it that a fake factory was built as marketing ploy. When trains would pass on nearby tracks, paper would be burned, and smoke would billow out giving the impression industry was booming in the area. By the mid 20th century developers were building homes in Medford, and supporting facilities such as grocery stores and shopping centers were being constructed as well.
