Farmingdale is a wonderful village in the remarkable Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County, Long Island, New York. This splendid community has a rich history and in the 1830’s, land developer Ambrose George purchased a large tract of land in the area called “Hardscrabble”. He built a general store in anticipation of the railroad and when the railroad arrived in 1841, it named the stop Farmingdale. A fire department was organized in 1886, and the village was incorporated in 1904, then the State Agricultural and Technical School was established here in 1912. A private 18-hole private golf course was designed by Devereaux Emmet north of the community in 1923 and the State of New York purchased and expanded the development. It reopened as Bethpage State Park in 1932. This area now represents the more upscale part of Farmingdale with its rolling hills and wide boulevards.
According to the 2010 census, the village has a population of approximately 8,189 residents. Farmingdale is a common name in the area with South Farmingdale and East Farmingdale nearby, both unincorporated areas outside the village limits. “Farmingdale” is listed as the postal address for many places not in the city limits, but they all share the common zip code of 11735. Farmingdale is a charming community and has a total area of 1.1 square miles, all of it being land.
