Mastic is a splendid hamlet and census designated place (CDP) in the wonderful Town of Brookhaven. Located Suffolk County in Long Island, New York, Mastic is a great place to call home. At the time of the 2010 census, Mastic had an approximate population of 15,418 residents. The zip code for this delightful hamlet is 11950, and the hamlet has a total area of 4.0 square miles, almost all of it being land. Originally the area provided farming, fishing and hunting land for Native Americans. English settlers arrived at the start of the 18th century and built estates along the Moriches Bay. The Manor of Saint George, owned by the Smith Family, was occupied by the British and used as a fort during the American Revolutionary War. William Floyd who lived just across the peninsula was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The Long Island Rail Road built its station here in 1882. “Forge” was originally the name of the hamlet, but it was changed to “Mastic” in 1893.
In addition to a rich history, Mastic also boasts excellent schools. Most of the children of Mastic attend schools in the William Floyd School District but a few children living in the Manor Park section of the hamlet attend schools in the Eastport-South Manor Central School District. Near the southern end of the hamlet, along the Forge River, is the Poospatuck Indian Reservation. The town of Brookhaven, in which Mastic is located, is one of ten towns in Suffolk County. It’s the most populous with 486,040 residents. Brookhaven is unique in that it stretches from shore-to-shore, from the north shore to the south shore of Long Island. Mastic is about 50 miles from the New York Metropolitan area. Brookhaven is home to the Brookhaven National Laboratory and Stony Brook University, which employ local residents.
