Muttontown is a remarkable village in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County, Long Island, New York. The village was incorporated in 1931, and is located on the North Shore of Nassau County. At the time of the 2010 census, the village had a population of approximately 3,497 residents. The community is comprised of more than 4,500 acres, an area of 6.1 square miles. Muttontown is bordered on the south by Jericho, on the north by East Norwich and the village of Upper Brookville, on the west by the village of Brookville, and on the east by the village of Oyster Bay Cove. Additionally,Muttontown is located just 25 minutes from Manhattan with the main access roads being Route 106 and Route 25A. The name “Muttontown” is derived from the early use of the land for grazing sheep. Early English and Dutch settlers found the rolling hills ideal for grazing thousands of sheep which provided mutton and wool. Children in the village attend the Locust Valley Central School District, the Jericho Union Free School District, or the Syosset Central School District, since Muttontown does not have it’s own school district.
