Manorville is an alluring hamlet and census designated place (CDP) in the remarkable Town of Brookhaven. Located in Suffolk County in Long Island, New York, Manorville is a great place to call home. Although most of Manorville is in the Town of Brookhaven, a small corner in the northeast is considered to be in the town of Riverhead. At the time of the 2010 census, the hamlet had a population of around 14,314 residents. The hamlet has a total area of 25.5 square miles, with almost all of it being land. In addition to its great location, Manorville also has a rich history. For a time in the 1800’s, the local rail station was named “Saint George’s Manor”. Station agent, Seth Raynor, who was a patriot during the American Revolutionary War, disliked the British sounding name. He painted over the sign which hung at the station, having it read instead, “Manor”. When the post office opened in 1907, the name was changed to “Manorville”.
The land in this area is heavily wooded and the western edge lies partially within the Long Island Central Pine Barrens. Wetlands are a feature in the northern section of the hamlet near the Peconic River. A large part of the northeastern portion of the hamlet is barred from further development because it’s in the “Core Preservation Area”. Manorville is sometimes referred to as “The Gateway to the Hamptons” because of it’s close proximity. The terrain of Manorville is slightly rolling, punctuated with the occasional kettle hole pond. The area was formed by an ancient glacier which drifted south from Canada and terminated in the area creating the island.
