Mineola is a village in the town of Hempstead, located on Long Island, in Nassau County, New York. Garden City serves as the county seat. Incorporated in 1906, this hamlet sits on 1.9 square miles, all of it land, and has a population of roughly 19,028 residents. The name Mineola is derived from a Native American word meaning a "pleasant place". The history of European settlers here goes back to 1609 when Henry Hudson claimed the area for the Dutch East India Company. In 1858 the land was named for an Algonquin Indian Chief, “Miniolagamika”. His name translated “Pleasant Village”, and was eventually shortened to “Mineola”. Many early aviators took advantage of the rolling fields and favorable winds in the area, taking numerous historic flights, and the fields of Mineola were central to the history of flight. Other villages within 1.5 miles of Mineola are Williston Park, East Williston, Garden City, Herricks, Carle Place, Albertson, Garden City Park, and Searingtown.
The children of Mineola are served by the Mineola Union Free School District which is ranked 47th in the state of New York. Chaminade High School, a Catholic school with a history of being academically rigorous, is also in Mineola. Residents in the area have access to so many great activities. Great stores are also close by in one of the finest shopping venues in the northeast, Roosevelt Field Mall. Getting around is easy due to quick access to local thoroughfares, including the East Jericho Turnpike which runs east-west through the center of town. Meadowbrook State Parkway forms the eastern boundary of the village. Residents have the unique opportunity to be one hour from the cultural hub of North America, with New York City located just a one hour drive away to the west, and to have views of the beautiful Atlantic Oceans, just 15 minutes to the south.
