Middle Island is a charming hamlet and census designated place (CDP) in the alluring Town of Brookhaven. Located in Suffolk County in Long Island, New York, the hamlet of Middle Island is a great place to call home. At the time of the 2010 census, Middle Island had a population of approximately 10,483 residents. The hamlet has a total area of 8.3 square miles with 8.2 square miles being land and the remainder being water. The hamlet’s name is reference to its location halfway between the eastern and western ends of Long Island, as well as it being halfway between Long Island Sound to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. In addition to a great location, the hamlet also has a rich history. The beginning of European-American history in the area can be traced back to 1766 when the First Presbyterian Church was built. The pastor, who was also a doctor, would ride horseback to visit congregants of his immense parish. He carried Bibles and medicine in his saddle bags. In 1813, the first schoolhouse was erected.
This family friendly community not only has a rich history, but also boasts excellent schools and ample opportunities for recreation. The children of Middle Island attend schools in the Longwood Central School District which is the largest district on the island. Additionally, there are three public golf course in Middle Island. Cathedral Pines County Park and Prosser Pines County Park are both in the hamlet as well as Spring Lake, Artist Lake, and Pine Lake. The headwaters of the Carmans River are also in Middle Island.
