Montauk is an endearing hamlet in the Town of East Hampton, located in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. Montauk and surrounding areas are considered to be in “The Hamptons”. As of the 2010 census, Montauk had a population of approximately 3,326 residents. The first lighthouse in the state of New York was located on Montauk Point and it's currently the fourth oldest, active lighthouse in the United States. The Army, Navy, Coast Guard and Air Force have all had a base in the area at one time or another.
Montauk is home to six state parks making it a major tourist destination. In addition to the state parks are Montauk County Park and nature conservancy areas. The Hampton Jitney provides bus service to Manhattan and the Long Island Rail Road provides service along the Montauk Branch to other locations on Long Island and also to New York City. Bus service via Suffolk Transit is seasonal.
