The village of Blue Point is an impressive hamlet and census designated place (CDP) in the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. At the time of the 2010 census, Blue Point had a population of around 4,773 residents. The village occupies a total land area of 1.8 square miles, almost exclusively land, with one half a percent being water. Blue Point has a station on the Long Island Rail Road with facilitates travel to and from the New York metropolitan area. Blue Point is found within Brookhaven. Brookhaven is the most populous of the ten towns that make up Suffolk County, and is about 50 miles from Manhattan. Brookhaven stretches from the north shore to the south shore of Long Island. Of the 932 towns in New York State, Brookhaven is the second most populous town (with water included in the total area), exceeded only by the town of Hempstead which lies in Nassau County.
Brookhaven was founded as an agricultural hamlet in the mid-17th century. It expanded to become a center of shipbuilding. The population in the area exploded post WWII when the area experienced a housing boom. The Town of Brookhaven has a population of approximately 486,040 residents and is home to Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory. Additionally, Brookhaven has coastline on both Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. Smithtown and Islip lie to the west of Brookhaven, and Southampton is to the east.
