Laurel is a charming little hamlet in the town of Southold, with a small portion of it being in the town of Riverhead. At the time of the 2010 census, Laurel had an approximate population of 1,394 residents. Laurel has a total area of 3.1 square miles and is in the 11948 zip code. Laurel has had several names including “Middle Ground” and later “Franklinville” but was forced to find another name because Franklinville was already being used by another town. “Laurel” became the new name for this family-friendly hamlet. In addition to an interesting history, Laurel also has great educational opportunities. Students in Laurel attend schools in the Mattituck-Canoga Union Free School District.

The town of Southold also contains a hamlet by the same name.

Robin's Island, which lies in the great Peconic Bay, is also part of the town of Southold.
