One of ten towns in Suffolk County, the Town of Southold is a great place to call home in the State of New York. Southold, New York, is found in the northeastern tip of the county, on the peninsula known as the North Fork of Long Island. Composed of 404.5 square miles, Southold has around 163 linear miles of coastline and is home to Flat Hammock, the Dumpling Islands, the Mattituck Inlet Wetlands and Beaches, Pine Islands and Shallows, Pipes Cove Creek and Moores Drain, Fisher Island Beaches and the Goldsmith Inlet and Beach. Southold is also home to a charming hamlet known as East Marion, New York. East Marion the census-designated place roughly corresponds with the hamlet by the same name. The CDP has an approximate population of 926 residents as of the 2010 Census.
East Marion and Orient were originally called Oysterponds Upper Neck and Oysterponds Lower Neck, however the two went their separate ways in 1836. East Marion was renamed at the time for General Francis Marion of the Revolutionary War. The “East” designation was added because of the existing upstate town of Marion. East Marion is composed of 2.4 square miles and is served by the Oysterponds Union Free School District.
