Peconic is a hamlet in the town of Southold, in Suffolk County, on Long Island, New York. Peconic has a population of roughly 683 and is in the 11958 zip code. The hamlet of Peconic has a total area of 3.5 square miles. The name Peconic Bay is derived from the name given to the area by Native Americans meaning “nut trees”. Originally called “Hermitage” by early settlers, the name for the town was later changed to Peconic.
During the 1800’s and early 1900’s, the area was home to the Peconic School, an artists colony led by such painters as Edward August Bell, Henry Prellwitz, Edith Mitchill Prellwitz, and Benjamin Rutherford Fitz. Long Island has long been a favorite spot for artist to paint, display, and sell their work. Children in the hamlet of Peconic attend schools in either Mattituck-Cutchogue Union Free School District or Southold Union Free School District.
