Originally called “Hermitage” by early settlers, the name for the town was later changed to Peconic.
During the 1800’s and early 1900’s, the area was home to the Peconic School, an artists colony led by such painters as Edward August Bell, Henry Prellwitz, Edith Mitchill Prellwitz, and Benjamin Rutherford Fitz.
