It was an amusement park which featured a pier, picnic ground, dancing pavilion, skating rink and an oyster restaurant. The amusement park led to the development of a summer community centered around bungalows. The village was incorporated in 1931 and residents fought hard to keep the area from becoming industrialized. Today, there are two beaches and a harbor front park for resident’s enjoyments. Van Brunt Manor Beach is on Setauket Harbor while Walnut Beach lies on Port Jefferson Harbor. Dinghy and kayak rentals are available. There are two large fields, a private boat ramp, a playground and gazebo at California Park.
