Eastport is an alluring hamlet and census designated place (CDP) in the splendid Town of Brookhaven. Located in Suffolk County in Long Island, New York, Eastport at the time of the 2010 census, had a population of approximately 1,831 residents. This delightful hamlet has a total land area of 5.4 square miles of which 5.3 square miles is land and 0.12 square miles is water, and is in the 11941 zip code. A gristmill was built in Eastport in the 1730’s when the area was two hamlets, Seatuck and Waterville. When the town was denied the name of “Seatuck” for their local post office, because it too closely resembled “Setauket” which was an already establish post office, the name of the hamlet was changed to “Eastport”. In the early part of the 20th century, Eastport was the capital for the production of Long Island ducks, sending more than 6.5 million ducks to market each year. Almost all of the 80 duck farms are out of business after descendents of the original farmers sold off valuable waterfront property to housing developers. In addition to a rich history, Eastport also has a great location. Traveling from Eastport to New York City is about 77 miles, and it’s only an hour and a half drive to Manhattan.
In addition to a great location, Eastport also has wonderful schools. The children of Eastport attend schools in the Eastport-South Manor Central School District (ESM). This district serves parts of Brookhaven and Southampton as well. There are four elementary schools and a combined junior/senior high school. Residents of Eastport enjoy great options for shopping, dining, entertainment and recreation as well. For the past 30 years, Eastport has been reinventing itself as an antiques market. Several antique stores can be found on Main Street. Eastport is a boating and fishing center due to its access to Moriches Inlet and the Atlantic, and having a marina, public boat launch, and many backyard docks.
