Jericho is an impressive village and census designated place (CDP) in Nassau County, Long Island, New York. Situated on the north shore of Long Island, Jericho had a population of 13,567 at the time of the 2010 census. The total land area of Jericho is 4.1 square miles, all of it being land. Jericho boasts an outstanding location, primarily in the Town of Oyster Bay, with a small portion of the village falling in the Town of Hempstead. Additionally, Midtown Manhattan is approximately 29 miles to the west. Conveniently located, Long Island Expressway is the most direct route to Manhattan via car, but train service is available at nearby Syosset train station. The cloverleaf access to Jericho Turnpike facilitates travel in the area.
Jericho also has a rich history and was originally part of the Robert Williams Plantation in the 1640’s. Most of the English families who settled in Jericho were Quakers that fled England to seek a peaceful life as farmers. In 1692 the name of the village was changed from Lusum to Jericho, after the town in the Middle East, near the Jordan River. In 1802 a post office was established, soon followed by a school and a cider mill. The town grew steadily as amenities were added such as public water, more schools, and a fire department. Eventually the area became part of what was known as the “Gold Coast”, an area which lured many of the wealthy and famous from New York City. The Gold Coast was the summer playground of the rich and many sprawling mansions were built in the area. The children of Jericho are served by the Jericho Union Free School DIstrict and the Syosset Central School District which boundaries do not necessarily correspond with the village boundaries. The NYCB Theater at Westbury, originally know as the Westbury Music Fair, is a theater-in-the-round facility nearby with seating for 2,870.
