The geography of Kings Park is dominated by Sunken Meadow State Park, which fills much of the northern half of the hamlet and covers its entire coastline along the Long Island Sound. The park features a 27-hole public golf course, miles of hiking trails, three miles of public beaches, facilities for soccer and softball, and playgrounds. A 5k running course through the park is considered one of the nation's toughest courses for high school cross-country competition. Much of the park was formerly the ground of the Kings Park Psychiatric Center, its abandoned Gothic buildings still visible from many points in town.
Kings Park's center consists of an intersection between Main Street, County Roads 11 and 14, and Meadow, Kohr and Old Dock Road. Shopping and food are available in and around Kings Park Shopping Center. The Long Island Rail Road has a station in town, giving residents easy access to work or entertainment in New York City.
Just under 20,000 permanent residents live in Kings Park, most of whom are professionals with families, working in New York City. Kings Park services its own fire district and schools. Suffolk County Police provide law enforcement.
