Rocky Point is an outstanding hamlet in the splendid Town of Brookhaven, New York. Brookhaven, in which Rocky Point is found, is one of ten towns that make up Suffolk County and has the distinction of being the only one that extends fully from the north shore to the south shore of Long Island. Brookhaven is home to Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory which both employ local residents.

RCA, an electronics company in business from 1918 to 1986, once operated a large transmitting and transmitter research facility in Rocky Point. Transatlantic radio messages from “Radio Central”, as it was called, were received in Britain, France, Italy, Germany, Austria, and Poland. The first transatlantic commercial telephone service linking New York to London was initiated by AT&T at Radio Central in 1927. The 5,200-acre site was decommissioned and demolished in the 1970’s and is now owned by the State of New York. Rocky Point and nearby Shoreham were the home to inventor and scientist Nikola Tesla the Serbian-American engineer and physicist who is best known for his contributions to the design of the modern alternating currents electricity supply system. Tesla, a contemporary and friend of Mark Twain, had early research facilities in Rocky Point.
