The beautiful village of Massapequa Park is located in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County, on the south shore of Long Island, New York. Hamlets bordering the village on the eastern and southern edges of the village are considered part of Massapequa Park but fall under the jurisdiction of the Town of Oyster Bay. At the time of the 2010 census, the population was approximately 17,008 residents. Massapequa Park is bordered by Massapequa to the west and east, South Farmingdale to the north, and North Massapequa to the northwest. The body of water to the south is South Oyster Bay.
Original inhabitants of the area were Native Americans, then in the 19th century, families of German descent came to Massapequa Park from Brooklyn. At that time, the community was know as Wurtenberg or Stadtwurtemburg. The hub of activity was the Woodcastle Hotel, a rooming house built in 1868, which has since been destroyed by fire. Much of the town was developed by a real estate firm owned by three Irish-Americans. The town still retains it's mostly Irish street names. Dozens of Sears Roebuck “kit houses” were built in two areas of the village. The hamlet experienced growth in 1973 when Sunrise Mall, now known as Westfield Sunrise, was built. It became a hangout for baby boomers. Today the northern part of the village is served by the Farmingdale School District while the remainder of the town is served by the Massapequa School District.
