North Hills is a charming village in the town of North Hempstead, Nassau County, Long Island, New York. The steep shoreline and rugged terrain of this picturesque area is a result of the melting of a glacier which moved from Canada and ended up at current day Long Island about 1,100 years ago. Shelter Rock the largest glacial boulder on Long Island, weighing approximately 2,600 tons, is evidence of the melted glacier. The huge overhang of the giant rock made it a perfect shelter, hence the name. Native American artifacts found around this rock indicate it was one of the oldest Native American habitations on Long Island. Farming was the occupation here in the mid 17th century. Lands of the Cow Neck peninsula were enclosed by fenced in areas now known as Manhasset and Port Washington. The areas were used for grazing. There were gradual changes in the early 1900’s when the wealthy elite of New York City came to Long Island. A handful of wealthy families bought large portions of land in North Hills and built opulent estates. The rich and famous came to relax and play. The north shore of Long Island had the highest concentration of wealth in the country and became known as “The Gold Coast”. North Hills was incorporated in 1929, and today this remarkable community with its rich history has a population around 5,075 residents. North Hills is comprised of 2.8 square miles, all of it being land. It’s adjacent to Interstate 495 also known as the Long Island Expressway, and the Northern State Parkway. Nearby villages within 1.5 miles are North Hempstead, Searingtown, Manhasset Hills, Albertson, Roslyn, Herricks, Manhasset, and Roslyn Heights. In addition to easy access to highways and wonderful neighboring communities, North Hills residents also enjoy splendid weather, the average summer temperature here being a near perfect 72 degrees.
The children in the North Hills area are served by the Sewanhaka Central High School District, Massapequa, Levittown, and East Meadow Union Free School Districts. Public transportation is popular for workers commuting to Manhattan. A free shuttle runs from the Village Hall to the train station in Manhasset. La Guardia International Airport is 20 minutes away via Grand Central Parkway or Cross Island Parkway. Some common occupations of resident are in the area of management, sales, and office and administrative support. There are several casual dining spots in North Hills: delis, American diners, and pubs. Upscale dining is also available with some of the best ethnic foods in the area. All along the Gold Coast are museums, mansions, bike paths, hiking trails, beaches, fishing piers, arboretums, and shopping venues, all within easy reach. There are two impressive golf courses in the area.
