Oceanside is located in Nassau County, Long Island, New York. The hamlet is located in the 11572 zip code and has a population of around 32,109 residents. Oceanside is in the southern part of the town of Hempstead. English settlers established a township here in 1674 known as Christian Hook. Land development was rapid as oyster sales became the prime source of income for locals. In the 19th century, residents decided the name Oceanville would sound better than Christian Hook, since “Oceanville oysters” sold very well. The name was officially changed in 1864. Upon discovery there was already an Oceanville, they changed the name again in 1980 to Ocean Side. The final name change came in 1918 when the name was condensed to one word. The Atlantic ocean is actually a few miles to the south of the village. Long Island serves as a barrier between Oceanside and the open Atlantic Ocean. In the midst of the post WWII housing boom, Oceanside began to resemble Levittown, a meticulously planned community to the south. Big homes were being built as were more schools and parks on what had previously been uninhabited land. The total land area of the village is 5.4 square miles. Sunrise Highway forms the northern border of town. The Long Beach Branch of the LIRR passes through Oceanside to the west and there is a convenient Oceanside station. There are four stations easily accessible to Oceanside residents.
As a family-friendly community, Oceanside has its own school district. In addition to great schools, the community also boasts a plethora of opportunities for outdoor recreation. Baldwin Park, has softball diamonds, two soccer fields, a skate park and recreation area.
