Oakdale is a delightful hamlet in the town of Islip, in Suffolk County, on Long Island, New York. At the time of the 2010 census, Oakdale had a population of approximately 7,974 residents. Oakdale has a total area of almost four miles and is in the 11769 zip code. In addition to a great location, Oakdale also has a rich history. Oakdale was originally inhabited by the Secatogue or Secatokets tribe of Native Americans. An early settler, William Nicoll, purchased a large portion of land in 1683 and more later in 1703. British Troops unnerved local residents as they continually passed through Oakdale during the American Revolution.
Islip, in which Oakdale is located, is one of the ten towns comprising Suffolk County. Islip had a population of around 335,543 residents at the time of the 2010 census. Islip has a total area of approximately 105 square miles. The smaller unincorporated hamlet of Islip lies within the town of Islip. The town of Islip is bordered by Babylon to the west, Brookhaven to the east, Smithtown to the north, and the Atlantic ocean to the south. Part of the Great South Bay and Fire Island area are included in the boundaries of Islip.The climate of Islip straddles the classifications between humid subtropical and humid continental climate, along with some maritime influences. The USDA classifies Islip in the 7a zone for hardiness. The average temperature in July is a near perfect 74 degrees.
