Brookhaven is a remarkable town in Suffolk County in Long Island, New York. Located in the 11719 zip code, the Town of Brookhaven is the most populous of the ten towns in Suffolk County with approximately 486,040 residents. Considered part of the New York metropolitan area, Brookhaven is approximately 50 miles from Manhattan. Additionally, of the ten towns in the county, Brookhaven is the only one that stretch shore-to-shore, from the north to the south shores of Long Island. In addition to its great location, Brookhaven also boasts a rich history. Founded as an agricultural enclave in the mid-17th century, Brookhaven later would become a major center for shipbuilding. The post WWII boom in Brookhaven was due in large part to its close proximity to New York City. In the hamlet of Farmingville is a large hill named Bald Hill. It marks the point where the glacier, which moved down from Canada, stopped forming Long Island. A Vietnam veteran’s memorial sits atop Bald Hill. To the west of Bald Hill Cultural Park is Telescope Hill which is the highest point in town. Brookhaven is home to Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory. Stony Brook University is the town’s largest employer.
The Dutch traders who settled the area around Brookhaven in the early 1600’s discovered what Native Americans had known for centuries which is the area had a temperate climate, beautiful water, and fertile soil.
