Atlantic Beach, New York, is an affluent village off the south shore of Long Island. Atlantic Beach is in Nassau County and falls in the 11509 zip code. Forbes magazine, in 2012, reported that Nassau County was one of the highest income counties in the United States and the most affluent in the state of New York. The village is comprised of 0.5 square miles and has a population of approximately 1,910 residents. This beautiful community is on the larger Long Beach Barrier Island, which is one of the outer barrier islands. When the first European settlers arrived they found the Native American tribes of the Sacatogue, Marsapeque, and Matinecoc occupying what is now Nassau County. Dutch settlers populated the western portion of Long Island while the English, from Connecticut, were settled in the eastern portion. Much has changed in the Atlantic Beach area since those days, but throughout the years the community has been a location used in movies and television, and has been written about in books. It’s no wonder why, the village is extremely beautiful, and sunsets on the beach here are unparalleled. Nassau County has a climate similar to other coastal areas of the northeast with summers that are warm, and winters that are cool and wet. The Atlantic Ocean brings afternoon sea breezes which bring relief from the heat during the summer months and help to limit the severity and frequency of thunderstorms.
In addition to great weather, there are a few stores and restaurants in the village and many more shops can be found in neighboring cities, including Manhattan which is just 21 miles away. Public schools and medical care facilities are also nearby and easily accessed. As you might expect, the beautiful beaches are the main attraction and central to activities in the village. Season passes are available to Atlantic Beach residents, and convenient access to the beaches is available through nine different entrances. Some refer to Atlantic Beach as the “anti-Hamptons” as there is no need to wait two hours for a table at a fancy Hampton’s restaurant when all the locals are grilling down on the beach. Contrast celebrity mansions to petite vintage cabanas on the beach, where neighbors congregate and swap stories, peacefully bask in the sun, and watch children play in the surf. There are no chain stores, there is no traffic congestion, and no rushing about, which is why Atlantic Beach has become a mecca for families, many who’ve been coming here for generations and wouldn't think of spending their leisure time anywhere else. Homes for sale in Atlantic Beach range from $8.5 million for a five bedroom/ five bath beauty with a waterfront view, to $449,000 for a bungalow. The average listing price for an Atlantic Beach home is around $690,000. Single family homes and condos are available in varying sizes, ages and architectural styles. Styles of homes currently on the market in Atlantic Beach include traditional, colonial, ranch, Mediterranean, and contemporary. Beautifully maintained cottages also abound.
