Farmingville is a remarkable hamlet and a census designated place (CDP) in the delightful town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County in Long Island, New York. At the time of the 2010 census, Farmingville had an approximate population of 15,481 residents. Farmingville was settled in the 18th century. It previously had the names of Bald Hills and Mooney Ponds before being named Farmingville. The name is curious since the soil and the hills in the area are not conducive to farming. Farmingville got its own post office in 1950 and the current zip code is 11738.
The Bald Hills Schoolhouse was built in 1850 and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. The home of the first schoolmaster, Elijah Terry, built in 1823, still stands next door to the schoolhouse. One of the highest points on the island is Bald Hill. It’s located on the Ronkonkoma Moraine, the site where the ancient glacier which moved down from Canada, stopped its advance. On top of Bald Hills is Vietnam Memorial Park which was dedicated in 1991. Previously a ski area, Brookhaven Amphitheater is a spacious, 20-acre outdoor facility which showcases musical talent and is a feature of the Bald Hill Cultural Center. In addition to this rich history and its multiple points of interest, Farmingville also boasts excellent public schools. The children of Farmingville attend the largest school district on Long Island, the Sachem School District. Farmingville is close to major transportation hubs like Ronkonkoma and Medford Rail Station, and MacArthur Airport. Long Island Express is accessible from Exit 63.
