Floral Park, an incorporated village, is located on Long Island, in Nassau County, New York. Floral Park could be considered a borough of Queens, but is situated squarely between Queens and Hempstead, and is actually in the town of Hempstead. The population is approximately 15,900 residents and is in the 11001 zip code. The town consists of 1.4 square miles, all of it land and residents enjoy its close proximity to several other remarkable communities. The towns of South Floral Park, Bellerose, Stewart Manor, New Hyde Park, Elmont, and Franklin Square are all within 1.5 miles of Floral Park. This area was once the western edge of the great Hempstead Plains and boasts a long, interesting history. John Lewis Childs arrived in 1874 and built a successful seed and bulb business, and printed America’s first seed catalog. To promote his business, Childs named the town streets after flowers and renamed the town Floral Park. By 1903 the railroad was well established and the village boasted more than 200 acres of Childs’ flower beds. Today, Floral Park residents enjoy quick and convenient access to great public transportation. The MTA Bus Company operates express buses to midtown Manhattan and Nassau Inter-County Express also serves the neighborhood. The farm is replete with greenhouses, livestock, planting fields, orchards and herb gardens. Green Meadows Petting Farm is the perfect place for children and adults to have a hands-on experience with animals with pony rides and hayrides offered. Special events include a pumpkin patch in the fall and their Festival of Cultures in the spring.
