Levittown is a hamlet in the Town of Hempstead, New York on Long Island in Nassau County. Formerly known as Island Trees, Levittown is now a neighborhood of more than 51,000 residents in the 11756 zip code. This area belonged to the Massapequa Indians before being purchased by an English settler in 1664. Levittown was named for Levitt & Sons, Incorporated, which built homes in the post war era from 1947 to 1951 in this planned community on land that had previously been used for potato and onion farming. Levittown was the first mass-produced suburb in the county. Bill Levitt had seen military housing quickly constructed while serving in the Navy and upon returning from the war, convinced his father they could quickly build affordable homes for returning soldiers. The Levitts touted themselves as being manufacturers rather than builders. It’s reported that at the height of construction, Levitt could erect a home every 16 minutes. Homes typically sold for $7,990 with 5% down, though no down payment was required for veterans. The community came to symbolize the “American Dream”. Levittown lies between Hempstead and Farmingdale near Bethpage, Hicksville, East Meadow, Bellmore and Massapequa. Levittown is only an hour and fifteen minute drive to New York City.
