Franklin Square is an unincorporated area, and hamlet in the city of Hempstead, New York, in Nassau County. Franklin Square covers approximately 3 square miles and has a population around 29,320 residents. There’s some speculation the name of the town honors founding father Benjamin Franklin, although there’s nothing historically speaking to tie him to the area. More likely is the town was named for some early settler or notable resident. In 1643, English and Dutch settlers made treaties with local Native American tribes to buy roughly 100 square miles upon which they intended to start a settlement, in large part because the area was prime grazing land for cattle and other livestock, and would later be used as farmland. In the 1840’s, Walt Whitman was the schoolmaster here. By 1952, the farms were gone and urbanization of the area was in full throttle following the end of WWII. Emigrants from New York City were moving into newly built homes in Franklin Square. Sean Hannity, author, radio and television host, and political commentator, is a product of Franklin Square.
