Mount Sinai is a remarkable hamlet and census designated place (CDP) in the outstanding Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, on the north shore of Long Island, New York. At the time of the 2010 census, the hamlet had approximately 12,118 residents, and the local post office is in the 11766 zip code. Mount Sinai has a total area of 6.4 square miles, 6.0 square miles being land and 0.42 being water. Sharing borders with Mount Sinai are Port Jefferson to the west, Coram to the south, Miller Place to the east, Long Island Sound to the north, and Port Jefferson Station to the southwest. First settled in the 1660’s, Mount Sinai was known as “Old Mans” until the name was changed in the 1840’s.
Originally an agricultural area, Mount Sinai transformed into a popular resort town in the late 19th century and then into a suburb of New York City in the mid-20th century. It wasn’t until the 1960’s that residential construction really took off. Lands that were once farmed were sold to developers and new neighborhoods emerged. Davis Peach Farm, a 404 acre plot, was one of the farms sold to make room for residential development. In addition to a rich history, Mount Sinai also has excellent schools. The children of Mount Sinai attend schools in the Mount Sinai School District. Although Mount Sinai is primarily a residential community, it contains Mount Sinai Harbor and the very popular Cedar Beach. Popular pastimes for locals are clamming at low tide and fishing at high time, particularly for snapper and flounder, and hunting waterfowl.
