Miller Place is a delightful hamlet and census designated place (CDP) in the charming Town of Brookhaven of Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. At the time of the 2010 census, the hamlet had a population of around 12,339 residents. Miller Place has a total area of 6.6 square miles, all of it being land. This area has a rich history, has been inhabited since the 17th century and is named for the Miller family who were among the first settlers. Although once an agricultural area, the hamlet is new a densely populated suburb. Located on the islands north shore, Miller Place contains two miles of beach. Cedar Beach is the most popular and although owned by Mount Sinai, Miller Place owns the majority of land leading to this peninsular beach. The topography in the area is varied with hills and plains, with some areas being grassy and other areas lush with trees. The primary occupation in this part of the island was farming, however, many men went to sea while others were businessmen, carpenters, and even doctors.
Port Jefferson’s harbourfront district, five miles to the west, serves as the main commercial district for residents of both Miller Place and Mount Sinai. In addition to these wonderful features, the area also boasts great schools. Children in the hamlet attend schools in the Miller Place Union Free School District. Many people in Miller Place commute to New York City to work using the Long Island Rail Road which has nearby stations in Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma. Others prefer to drive the extensive highway system which is readily accessible. Stony Brook University and Brookhaven National Laboratory employ a number of area residents. In addition to great employment opportunities, the area also has an abundance of recreation and entertainment options. For example, each September, the William Miller House hosts the Miller Place-Mount Sinai Country fair, an annual festival including arts and crafts, house tours, and antique merchants.
