Lattingtown is an impressive incorporated village in the Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County, Long Island, New York. The Town of Oyster Bay is the most eastern of the three towns in Nassau County. The Town of Oyster Bay extends from Long Island Sound to the north, to the open waters of Oyster Bay and the Atlantic Ocean to the south. Hempstead borders the Town of Oyster Bay to the southwest and North Hempstead is to the northwest. Suffolk County is immediately to the east. Oyster Bay has the distinction of being the only one of the three towns in Nassau County which extends from the north shore to the south shore of Long Island. Including Lattingtown, there are a total of 18 villages and 18 hamlets in the Town of Oyster Bay. The United States Postal Service has divided the locations into 30 different zip codes serviced by 20 post offices. Each post office bears the name of the village in which it resides, although the boundaries seldom correlate. Lattingtown has a total area of 3.8 square miles, most of it land and 1.05% water.
At the time of the 2010 census, the population of Lattingtown was approximately 1,739 residents. Originally, the Matinecock Indians occupied the marshy area of present day Lattingtown. Richard Latting and his son purchased the area from the Matinecocks in 1660. The Latting’s business was selling marsh reed for thatch-roof houses. Sagamore Hill, located in nearby Cove Neck, was the residence and “Summer White House” for 26th president of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt. Sagamore Hill is now a museum. The area received a lot of media attention when Roosevelt was in residence at the Summer White House. In 1986 the movie “The Money Pit” was filmed in Lattingtown. Other local attractions include the Bailey Arboretum, named after longtime residents Frank and Marie Bailey.
