Oysters harvested in the area are now the only source of traditionally farmed oysters from Long Island and provide 90% of the oysters harvested in the state of New York. The hamlet is comprised of 1.6 square miles of which 1.2 is land and 0.4 is water. The children of Oyster Bay are served by the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Central School District. Notables who spent their youth in the area include musician Billy Joel and tennis player John McEnroe.
