Calverton is a wonderful hamlet and census designated place (CDP) in Suffolk County in Long Island, New York. At the time of the 2010 census, Calverton had a population of approximately 6,510 residents. The hamlet has a total area of 28.5 square miles of which 28.0 is land and 0.5 is water. The majority of Calverton falls in the Town of Riverhead, but a largely undeveloped area south of the Peconic River is in the Town of Brookhaven.
Native Americans called the area Conungum or Kanungum meaning “fixed line” or “boundary”. The community was known for growing cranberries in the swampy areas near the Peconic River. When the Long Island Rail Road arrived in 1844, the area was called “Baiting Hollow Station”. The station closed in 1958. The history of Calverton is closely linked to the Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant which was located in Calverton from roughly 1953 to 1995. In 1953, the Navy purchased 6,000 acres around Calverton from a local farmer, in order to build a facility to test and finish jets. In 1978 Calverton National Cemetery was created from 1,000 acres of the the base. In 1995, the Navy began liquidating its land, and the area is now being developed as an industrial/office park. Crown Recycling and a Federal Express Distribution Center are located in the area.
