With its charming main street, complete with old trolley rails, it's easy to see why the village of Northport, located on the North Shore of Long Island is a popular place to visit or live.
Northport is in the town of Huntington, in Suffolk County. It's situated right off New York State Route 25, making it an ideal place for commuters. Although Northport is largely a bedroom community, with just 7,606 residents, it is a vibrant place with plenty to see and do.
Originally the home of the Matinecocks Indian tribe, one of the 13 tribes that shared Long Island, the rich farmland drew settlers in the 1800's. During this time period it was known as the Great Cow Harbor. One house from this time period, the Skidmore House, remains standing today.
In 1868, Northport got a station on the Long Island Railroad, and this fueled commerce and further growth. The old harbor fell into disuse in the 1920's, but was soon turned into the Northport Memorial Park, a favorite spot of the locals.
Although the majority of income from this community no longer comes from agriculture, the village has not forgotten its roots. Every year, the Cow Harbor Day is held, and includes a popular Great Cow Harbor 10k Run.
