Hauppauge is a hamlet in the towns of Islip and Smithtown in Suffolk County, on Long Island, New York. At the time of the 2010 census, Hauppauge had an approximate population of 20,882 residents. Hauppauge has a total area of almost 11 miles and is in the 11788 zip code. The village is named for the Native American word for “sweet waters”. Local tribes would get there water from this area rather than Lake Ronkonkoma where the water was not suitable for drinking. Hauppauge has a high underground water table and is known for its underground water springs. The Long Island Expressway passes through the southern edge of town.
The children in Hauppauge attend schools in the Hauppauge Union Free School District. Within the district are three elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school. Hauppauge is home to a huge industrial park, perhaps the second largest in the nation. The business are located at the edge of the hamlet, and the park is comprised of more than 1,300 companies.
